Fergus will be returning to Beckman on Monday, November 2nd from 10:30 -11:15am in the Atrium.  We hope you can stop in to meet him and see him demonstrate his scent work skills!

Fergus is a 7 year old male Border Terrier.  He has been certified as a therapy dog with the Alliance for Therapy Dogs since 2023. He has enjoyed being a reading assistance dog at the Urbana Neighborhood Connections Center many times, and has brought his friendly spirit to the Champaign Public Library, the Urbana Free Library, the Autumn Fields Assisted Living facility, Carle Foundation Hospital, and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign. He is looking forward eagerly to more visits at the Beckman Institute.

In addition to therapy dog activities, Fergus trains and trials in the sport of canine scent work.

The tour begins in Beckman's east atrium. After the tour, stay for Gather in the Garden, our weekly 10 a.m. Tuesday social hour. We serve free coffee. Register using this form if you plan to attend.

Note that this tour will be offered at 9 a.m. the first Tuesday of each month, except December, January and April. Beckman will not host a tour during those months.

Read understandable research posters from 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the Beckman Atrium (winner announced at 4:30 in the atrium). Then, celebrate winners of the Vision and Spirit Award, Staff Spirit and Dedication Award and robotic arm naming contest at 2:30 p.m. in the Beckman Auditorium, before the 3 p.m. Beckman-Brown Lecture featuring Bruce J. Tromberg. A reception will follow the lecture.

Bruce J. Tromberg, the director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering at the National Institutes of Health, will give the Beckman-Brown Lecture on Interdisciplinary Science at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the auditorium of the Beckman Institute.

The talk will be titled, "Accelerating Innovation and Technology Development through Engineering – Medicine Partnerships." A reception will follow.

Before the lecture, Beckman is hosting a poster contest for graduate students and postdocs from 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the Beckman Atrium. Then at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium, the institute will honor its Vision and Spirit Award and Spirit and Dedication Award winners, as well as the winner of its robotic arm naming contest.

The poster contest winner will be announced during the reception following the lecture at about 4:30 p.m.

The Psychology Department is excited to continue the First Friday Psychology-Beckman Colloquium Series for the 2026-2027 academic year, a monthly event designed to bring together members of the Department of Psychology, Beckman Institute, and beyond for engaging, cross-area conversations.
